India keen to Enhance Trade Ties with Israel, Jordan
February 2010, New Delhi: India is keen to expand its trade relations with Israel and Jordan, Jyotiraditya Scindia, India's minister of state for commerce and industry, said in recent visits to the countries.
Visiting Israel's President Shimon Peres on Wednesday, Scindia discussed various aspects of bilateral cooperation including a proposed free trade agreement.
The agreement is expected to provide a major boost to trade and economic cooperation.
The two leaders also discussed developing further cooperation in high tech areas including information technology, biotechnology, and nanotechnology. They also exchanged views on the global challenge posed by terrorism and ongoing cooperation between the two countries in the area of homeland security.
Prior to his Israel visit, Scindia was in Jordan where he held discussions with his counterpart Amer Hadidi and other key ministers. The talks focused on ways to augment bilateral trade and other issues of mutual interest.
In a statement, Scindia pointed out the vast potential for expanding trade between the two countries in sectors such as leather, information technology, pharmaceuticals, construction material and automobile sector.
Bilateral trade between India and Israel stands at US $3.55 billion for 2008-09, with exports from India amounting to $1.5 billion and imports to India amounting to $2.09 billion.
The trade turnover between India and Jordan in 2008 was $1.785 billion and $934 million in the first 11 months of 2009. Jordan's imports from India were $503 million in 2008 as compared to $469 million in 2007
