Thermo Fisher Scientific brings personnel radioactive contamination monitoring
to a new level with unique sculpted geometry for alpha and low energy beta detection

OAKWOOD VILLAGE, Ohio (date) – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, is excited to announce the introduction of the Thermo Scientific iPCM12 installed personnel contamination monitor. The iPCM12 brings personnel monitoring to a new level with a unique sculpted geometry for optimum alpha and low energy beta detection. Utilizing gas detection technology, the iPCM12 can detect lower limits of contamination not able to be seen by scintillation technology.

“In the nuclear power industry, thorough, complete and accurate personnel monitoring is essential but also time critical,” said Max Pottinger, product line manager for contamination products. “The new iPCM12 answers these challenges with advanced technology and a design that ensures precise total body monitoring with outstanding, time-saving, detection efficiencies. Combining serviceability with breakthrough software and electronics, the iPCM12 provides greater coverage area, improved sensitivity, and sum zones for distributed contamination, while significantly reducing counting time.”

Multi-detection zones ensure complete, precision monitoring
The Thermo Scientific iPCM12’s unique geometry encases up to 23 gas detectors, with auto-adjusting detectors making contact with the arm and the top of the shoe. The detectors are split into four detection zones to maximize monitoring of the body and extremities while minimizing the background radiation readings. A purged spare detector aids quick maintenance. Overall this provides a lower overall cost of ownership. Sum zones may be applied across all detectors, providing at least 250 zones per measurement. The full body height of sculpted detectors ensures the best coverage for all sizes of users.

iPCM12 informs how to use equipment, the location of contamination, and action to take
The easy-to-use iPCM12 monitor features a multi-language voice prompt that gives verbal instructions during monitoring to ensure correct positioning and actions required following an alarm. Should an alarm occur, a large touch-screen monitor displays the location of the contamination on the body. A USB security dongle allows supervisors access to diagnostic modes to further investigate the results.

Results are stored in a database for both local and remote access. The system’s QuickScan algorithm allows for faster beta and gamma contamination monitoring which is particularly useful when the required monitoring time for beta and/or gamma would be longer than for alpha radiation.

A gamma option provides up to ten scintillation detectors, monitoring the body, head and feet to levels better than a dedicated gamma portal monitor. With this option, users can set both gross and 60Co alarms.
