Thermo Fisher Scientific Contracted by Electricité De France to Install
Integrated Radiation Monitoring System in France’s Largest Nuclear Power Plant
FRANKLIN, Mass. (February 2, 2010) – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, has won a contract from Electricité De France (EDF), France’s state-owned utility, to supply and integrate a remote radiation monitoring system (RMS) at the Gravelines nuclear power plant, the country’s largest nuclear facility. The Thermo Scientific system is the first modern remote monitoring system to be installed at an EDF plant. More than 75 percent of France’s electricity comes from nuclear power generated by EDF’s 19 nuclear plants, which collectively produce 62,400 MW. EDF, a global company, employs more than 156,000 people.
“This agreement is a major milestone for Thermo Fisher Scientific,” said Stephen Pickering, director of sales for EMEA region. “Our remote monitoring technology is the most advanced in the world, and this contract with one of the most respected energy companies in the world confirms its global appeal.” The sale of the Thermo Scientific system to Gravelines was made through the Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Radiation, Measurement and Security Instrument (RMSI) Business Unit’s French partner, APVL Ingénierie. .
The Thermo Scientific RM&SI monitoring system will be integrated into EDF’s “ALARA” program that was launched by the utility to further improve safety, lower risk and reduce radiation dosage to workers. The Radiation Monitoring System is controlled by Thermo Scientific’s ViewPoint Enterprise software platform, a combination of telemetry, audio, video, instrument and sensor hardware controlled and monitored from a single software user interface.
Radiological readings from installed and portable radiation monitoring equipment, along with real-time video, two way audio and physiological data, will be managed by Gravelines’ radiation protection personnel from a centralized remote location. Gravelines managers will ensure safety by monitoring personnel dosimetry readings, radiation dose rates, ambient temperature and other physical parameters while observing workers on video monitors. To accomplish all this, Gravelines personnel will utilize a new Thermo Scientific Viewpoint Enterprise VISaR (video information server and recorder) system.
“The technology involved in the EDF contract is just one example of our commitment to provide the world with the most advanced radiation protection systems available,” said Adam Grose, vice-president and general manager of the Radiation Measurement and Security Instruments business. “Thermo Fisher Scientific’s commitment to new product development and technology to meet the needs of the nuclear power plant industry is unwavering. We will continue to focus resources on providing technological solutions, allowing our customers to achieve their goals while reducing costs.”
