With the Thermo Scientific LFM-3 Portal Radiation Detection System,
operators can more easily interpret a full range of radiation data in waste
materials at waste-to-energy, recycling, medical, research and landfill facilities,
thus stopping radioactive contamination in its tracks

OAKWOOD VILLAGE, Ohio (December 15, 2009) – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, has introduced the Thermo Scientific LFM-3 Portal Radiation Detection System. The LFM-3 builds upon Thermo Scientific’s proven portal radiation detection technology, enabling users to easily interpret a full range of radiation data in waste materials. By making radiation detection easier, simpler and more understandable, the LFM-3 is designed to stop radioactive materials from entering landfill sites, where they could potentially cause health, cleanup or liability consequences.

Operating the LFM-3 system does not require intensive training or specialized knowledge. The system, with new state-of-the-art electronics, is controlled through a single-button operation and is ready to function within minutes of installation. The new Thermo Scientific system thus saves landfill operators time and money while ensuring radiological protection.

LFM-3 builds Thermo Scientific’s portal monitoring technology, the industry benchmark
“The Thermo Scientific LFM product family has long been considered the benchmark for radiation monitoring in the hospital and solid waste industries, with hundreds of installed units,” said Richard Oxford, product line manager for portal instruments. “In fact, 2009 marks the 25th anniversary of our high performance portal monitor offering and I’m excited about the introduction of the LFM-3, as we continue to provide new and expanded systems for the waste monitoring industry. The LFM-3 is a significant enhancement of that technology, resulting in higher performance for a wide range of radiation detection applications and at an affordable price. Our new system will make it possible for users to monitor waste materials more effectively for a safer, cleaner environment.”

The complete LFM-3 system consists of two lead shielded Nal (TI) scintillation detectors with advanced integral electronics shock-mounted in separate weatherproof, lightweight PVC housings that can withstand harsh environmental conditions. Designed to maximize sensitivity to gamma radiation with a minimum of nuisance alarms, the ruggedized detectors can readily discriminate, low, medium and high gamma energies providing additional information about the radiation detected. The detectors are connected by cable to a compact, easy-to-read, digital electronics package featuring a large LCD display screen. The cables are available in lengths up to 3,300 feet to accommodate customer requirements to cover distances between the detectors and the data storage and electronics interface unit. The LFM-3 may also be networked and the data transmitted to a central monitoring station with the visionary Thermo Scientific ViewPoint™ software system for remote monitoring and control.
